Species Account

A paper by van Nieukerken et al (2018) describes that Antispila treitschkiella feeds on Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) with two distinct generations a year. """"Link to article describing discovery of this species in the UK https://www.nhm.ac.uk/discover/news/2018/march/scientist-turns-detective-to-identify-mysterious-moth.html

""The Dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) feeding species formerly named Antispila treitschkiella is now named Antispila petryi. All our former Antispila treitschkiella records in Kent will need to be reassigned to that species. """"Reference: van Nieukerken, Lees, Doorenweerd, Koster, Bryner, Schreurs, Martijn, Timmermans, Sattler (2018), Two European Cornus L. feeding leafmining moths, Antispila petryi Martini, 1899, sp. rev. and A. treitschkiella (Fischer von Röslerstamm, 1843) (Lepidoptera, Heliozelidae): an unjustified synonymy and overlooked range expansion, Nota Lepi. 41(1) 2018: 39–8""

The larval foodplant, Cornelian Cherry, is planted widely as an ornamental, as such the mines are likely to be found in urban and suburban situations.

Foodplant

Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) only.

Record Verification

Grade 2 adults can be confused with other species, so good quality photographs or possibly a specimen will be required if the recorder is not familiar with the species.

Grade A records of leafmines can be accepted without the need to see the actual leaf or a good photo.
