DistributionPhenologyReporting RatePhotos
In light of research published in 2022, this species and the closely related B. confusella will need dissection for confirmation to species level. Current recording and mapping therefore effectively show an aggregation of B. confusella/pinicolella. ""
Hall and Plant (see Ent Rec 134(2) 2022, after Berggren et al, 2022) stated that B. pinicolella should be split into two species, with B. confusella being new to science.
These two species can only be reliably identified by dissection. B. confusella has a wider range of larval food plants, inc. various Pinus and Larix. As such it can be expected that most, if not all, Kent records refer to this species.
Given the above, there are at present no confirmed records of pinicolella for VC’s 15/16. The mapped distribution refers to what for now must be considered to be pinicolella/confusella agg.
Grade 2 — adults can be confused with other species, so good quality photographs or possibly a specimen will be required if the recorder is not familiar with the species.
