This species and Lesser Common Rustic cannot be identified from external characters as no reliable diagnostic features have been found. Examination of the genitalia is always required for confirmation to species level. Lesser Common Rustic is on average slightly smaller, but size ranges overlap. Both species are highly variable with many forms and intermediates, which all occur in both species.
Record as Mesapamea secalis agg. unless confirmed as above.
Grade 4 — adults require dissection to separate from other similar species.
