Until recently restricted to beaches and undercliffs at two locations in Kent, the best known being at Folkstone Warren. However, in recent years it has been found to be much more widespread and is found at several inland sites as well as all along the Kent coastline. It is one of our most frequently recorded Clearwing species. In June 2024 it has been recorded at multiple sites across the Thames in Essex. ""Larva feeds within roots of Common Sorrel, Sheep's Sorrel and Dock, over-wintering at least once.""""The species remains fully protected under Schedule 5 of the UK Wildlife and Countryside Act and as such, disturbance, including searching for this species through the use of pheromone lure, is illegal.
Grade 1 — adults are generally distinctive and unlikely to be confused with other species, but records outside documented range or flight period may require photos.
